When FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced that Inter Miami had been granted the invitation to participate in the 2025 Club World Cup as the host team for the United States, it sparked a heated debate in the country. Several American media outlets criticized FIFA's decision.

Tim Spiers, columnist for The New York Times, stated, 'It makes sense for Messi to participate in the Club World Cup, but the decision-making process is absurd. Inter Miami has not consistently proven themselves to be the best team in the United States. They have certainly proven themselves to be the best team in the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer, but that is only half of the country (along with some Canadian cities). Yes, Inter Miami remained undefeated against Western Conference teams this season, but they only won three out of six matches. It's like saying the Celtics are the best team in the UK because they won the Scottish Premiership.'

'By clumsily inventing rules to award a spot to the regular season champions instead of the overall champions (although Inter Miami could very well become the overall champions), or having the regular season champions play against the championship winners to determine the invite, it's a decision that deserves ridicule.'

Tom Bogert, a journalist for The Athletic, a subsidiary of The New York Times, expressed that FIFA's decision was terrible because they did not establish clear rules from the beginning.

Michelle Kaufmann, a reporter for the Miami Herald, also found FIFA's decision to not invite the Columbus Crew to be highly controversial. The Columbus Crew are the defending MLS champions and also the finalists in the Leagues Cup and Concacaf Champions League.

Overall, FIFA's decision to invite Inter Miami to the Club World Cup has sparked criticism, as many believe the process was flawed and lacked clear guidelines. The controversy surrounding the exclusion of other successful teams further adds to the debate.
